HERSHEY, Pa. — Michael and Katie Flinchbaugh of York County are the winners of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s 2009 Young Farmer and Rancher Achievement Award. The award was presented to the couple Tuesday at PFB’s 59th Annual Meeting here at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center.
Several couples from across the state sent applications that went through a selection process. Two finalists were chosen — Josh Bishop of Bucks County and the Flinchbaughs. After interviews during the three-day annual meeting, the Flinchbaughs were selected to represent Pennsylvania at the national level.
The Flinchbaughs said they look forward to “meeting wonderful people from across the country” as they attend the American Farm Bureau Federation convention in Seattle, Wash. this coming January.
In Seattle, they will compete against YF&R winners from across the country in an application and intense interview process.
The award honors farm couples or individuals between the ages of 18 and 35 who have demonstrated outstanding farming and leadership achievements. A panel of judges on the basis of their farm operations evaluated the contestants with emphasis on the farm’s growth and financial progress and the applicant’s record of leadership within and outside Farm Bureau.
The Flinchbaughs are part of a diverse family farm operation near Hellam that involves Michael’s parents, brother, and sister. The farm includes 1,400 acres of cash grain crops, a contract hog finishing operation, and a 20-acre orchard which supplies peaches, apples and other fruit to the family farm market.
The couple receives $500 from Dodge, use of a tractor from Case IH, and expense paid trips to the national convention in Seattle and PFB’s YF&R Leadership Conference next year.
